Frequently Asked Questions

What does the category optimizer do?

It analyzes every card in your wallet and maps each spending category — dining, groceries, travel, gas, streaming, and more — to the card that earns the highest rewards for that category. Instead of using one card for everything, you use the optimal card for each purchase type, which can increase total rewards by 2-4x.

How much more can I earn by optimizing by category?

It depends on your spending and cards, but most people earn 50-100% more by category-optimizing versus using a single flat-rate card. For example, if you spend $1,000/month on groceries at 1.5% instead of 4%, you're missing out on $300/year in that category alone. Across all categories, the difference can be $500-$1,500+ per year.

How many cards do I need for an optimized setup?

Most people achieve 90%+ of the maximum value with just 3-4 cards: a dining card (4-5x), a grocery card (4-6%), a travel card (3-5x), and a strong flat-rate card (2-2.5%) for everything else. Adding a 5th card for gas or streaming provides diminishing returns unless you spend heavily in those categories.

What's the difference between this and the Rewards Calculator?

The Rewards Calculator compares individual cards against your spending to find the single best card. The Category Optimizer assumes you'll use multiple cards and shows the best card per category from your existing wallet. Use the Calculator to decide which card to get next; use the Optimizer to decide which card to pull out at checkout.

Can I customize my monthly spending amounts?

Yes. We start with national average spending by category, but you can adjust every amount to match your actual spending. Click 'Adjust monthly spending' below the optimizer to enter your real numbers — this makes the annual savings projection much more accurate.
