Methodology
How We Rank Credit Cards
Our rankings are built on a transparent, weighted scoring model — no pay-to-play placements, no hidden affiliate-first ordering. Every card is evaluated by the same criteria.
Editorial Independence
CardCompare earns revenue through referral links when you apply for a card. However, affiliate relationships do not influence our scores or rankings. Cards are never paid to appear at the top of lists. Our editorial team reviews rankings independently and any potential conflict of interest is disclosed on the relevant card page.
Scoring Criteria
Rewards Value (30%)
- —We calculate estimated annual rewards based on average U.S. household spend ($2,000/mo).
- —Points and miles are valued at market transfer rates, not 1¢ each.
- —Sign-up bonuses are amortized over 24 months and added to year-one value.
- —Cards with flexible redemption (transfer partners, travel portal) earn bonus weight.
Fees & APR (25%)
- —Annual fee is subtracted from estimated annual rewards to compute net value.
- —Foreign transaction fees penalize international travelers' cards.
- —Balance transfer fee and intro APR length matter for debt-payoff cards.
- —Variable APR range is compared against the national average (currently ~21%).
Perks & Protections (20%)
- —Travel protections: trip delay, cancellation, lost luggage, primary rental car.
- —Purchase protections: extended warranty, purchase protection, return protection.
- —Credits: travel, dining, streaming, lounge access — scored by ease of use.
- —Insurance benefits: cell phone protection, identity theft monitoring.
Accessibility (15%)
- —Credit score required — higher scores for cards available to fair/good credit.
- —Application approval odds based on publicly reported data.
- —Student and secured cards evaluated in separate tiers vs. premium cards.
User Reviews (10%)
- —Aggregated from verified CardCompare user reviews (minimum 10 reviews).
- —Weighted by recency — reviews from the past 12 months count 2×.
- —Screened for spam and outliers before inclusion.
Editorial Score (100-pt bonus)
- —Hands-on evaluation by our editorial team.
- —Accounts for issuer reputation, app quality, and customer service.
- —Reviewed quarterly or when card terms change significantly.
Category-Specific Evaluation
Different card types serve different needs. We adjust our evaluation weights by category to reflect what matters most for each use case.
Travel Cards▾
Key factors: Transfer partner value, lounge access, travel protections
We value points at transfer rates (not 1¢ each), weight cards with 10+ airline/hotel partners more heavily, and score lounge access, Global Entry credit, trip insurance, and primary rental car coverage. Foreign transaction fee of 0% is required to score above 8/10.
Cash Back Cards▾
Key factors: Earning rates, category breadth, simplicity
We calculate annual cash back based on average U.S. household spending across categories. Flat-rate cards are compared against category-specific cards. Rotating categories are penalized for complexity. Redemption minimum thresholds and payout frequency matter.
Student & Credit-Building Cards▾
Key factors: Approval odds, credit bureau reporting, upgrade path
Rewards take a backseat. We prioritize: reporting to all 3 credit bureaus, no annual fee, access with limited/no credit history, and a clear upgrade path to an unsecured or rewards card. GPA rewards and student-specific perks add bonus points.
Business Cards▾
Key factors: Business-specific rewards, expense tools, employee cards
We evaluate earning rates on business categories (office supplies, shipping, advertising, internet), expense management integration, employee card issuance, and spending reports. Sign-up bonuses are weighted more heavily as business spend typically qualifies faster.
Premium & Luxury Cards▾
Key factors: Perk value vs. annual fee, credit utilization
We calculate total perk value (lounge access, airline credits, hotel status, concierge) and compare against the annual fee. A $695 card must deliver $800+ in usable value to score well. Credits with restrictions (airline-specific, calendar-year expiry) are discounted.
How Often We Update
Card terms change frequently. We monitor issuer websites and press releases daily. When a card changes its sign-up bonus, APR, annual fee, or major perks, we update the listing within 48 hours and log the change in our card changelog.
Full editorial re-reviews happen quarterly. The last full review of all cards was completed in Q1 2026.
