What is the Chase 5/24 rule?

I've heard that Chase will deny you if you have too many recent cards. How does this work?

Chase's 5/24 rule: if you've opened 5 or more personal credit cards (from ANY bank) in the past 24 months, Chase will automatically deny most card applications. This includes: personal cards from all banks, authorized user accounts (sometimes), and some store cards. It does NOT count: business cards, corporate cards. Strategy: if you want Chase cards, apply for those FIRST before other banks. Plan your application order carefully.
