Visa Raises Contactless Tap-to-Pay Limit to $500 in the US
Visa has announced an increase to the US contactless (tap-to-pay) transaction limit from $250 to $500, effective April 1, 2026. Mastercard is expected to follow with a similar increase.
What this means: - You can now tap to pay for purchases up to $500 without inserting your card or entering a PIN - The previous $250 limit forced card insertion for many grocery trips, electronics, and mid-range purchases - Merchants must update their terminals — expect a 2-3 month rollout period
Security concerns? Visa says fraud rates on contactless transactions remain lower than traditional swipe transactions, thanks to dynamic encryption and tokenization. Each tap generates a unique transaction code.
Why it matters: Contactless usage in the US has grown from 20% of in-person transactions in 2022 to over 55% in early 2026. Raising the limit removes friction for everyday purchases and brings the US closer to markets like Australia and the UK where contactless has no practical limit.
